INTRODUCTION TO BACCARAT
Baccarat or Punto Banco is a large casino game, at a single table sits 12-14 players and 3 stand-up casino dealers. In Baccarat there are two main bets: Banker (Banco) or Player (Punto). There is also a lesser used Standoff bet, this is a bet the hands will tie and pays out 8:1.Customers are allowed to bet on either hand, although bets won on banker have a 5% fee placed by the casino since banker has the advantage. It is customary that the dealer bets on Banker. Players bet on which hand they think will win, or if they will tie, for a 1:1 payout. There are only two hands dealt, banker and player, despite the number of people betting.

THE DEAL & THE PLAY
CARD ONE: In a casino game of Baccarat, a bettor is in control of the shoe (which holds the cards). At the start of the game, the bettor with the shoe draws one card and passes it to the dealer. The dealer passes the card to the customer with the highest bet on the Player hand. The next card drawn is the first of the banker’s hand and is placed next to the shoe.
CARD TWO: The better deals another player card and another banker card. After, the dealer calls for the player’s hand. The highest betting customer examines the hand and passes the cards to the dealer. The dealer turns the cards face-up and declares the total point value. Note, if the value is a sum greater than 10, for example, 9 and 6 sums to 15, the second number is the value of the hand (5). After, the dealer will call for the banker’s hand. The player with the shoe examines the banker’s hand before passing it to the dealer. The dealer flips the cards and announces the total for that hand.
CARD THREE: Point totals determine if a hand receives a third card.
- Player’s hand, the third card is added to the player hand first. If the total of the hand is 8 or 9, it is called a “natural,” and the hand does not receive more cards. Naturals are automatic winners, unless the banker tied or has a natural 9, no other cards are drawn. If the hand is at 6 or 7, the hand stands. Only if the hand totals 5 or less is a third card added. If a third card is required, the dealer will say “card for player,” and the customer with the show will pass the dealer a new card.
- Banker’s hand is slightly more complex when determining if a third card is needed. The banker’s move is dependent on the player’s third card. Below is a chart that outlines when a banker hits or stands.
